Delivering Electrical and Communications Infrastructure for Adelaide’s Tram Grade Separation Projects

Apex Energy Australia was engaged to deliver a specialised electrical and communications works package as part of South Australia’s Tram Grade Separation Projects.

The broader infrastructure program involved the removal of three congested tram level crossings and the construction of new overpasses at Plympton and Morphettville, along with the rebuild of the South Road tram overpass at Glandore. The projects were designed to improve safety, reliability and traffic flow across key parts of Adelaide’s transport network.

Our scope included the installation of electrical and communications conduits, supporting brackets and associated suspended infrastructure across three separate tram crossing sites: Morphett Road, Marion Road and Cross Road, and South Road.

The works required a high level of precision, coordination and site-specific delivery to ensure the infrastructure could be safely installed within a complex transport construction environment.

The Challenge

Delivering electrical and communications infrastructure within an active major transport project presented a number of technical and program challenges.

Each of the three sites had a unique design, meaning the bracketry, materials and installation methodology needed to be tailored to suit the specific requirements of each crossing.

The suspended conduit systems also needed to withstand the dynamic stress and vibration associated with tram movement. This required strict attention to material selection, fabrication quality and installation detail to ensure the finished infrastructure was durable, secure and fit for long-term operation.

Compounding the technical challenge was the pressure of a compressed delivery program. While the project start was delayed, the required completion milestone remained fixed, placing significant pressure on all contractors to coordinate works efficiently and maintain progress on site.

Apex Energy Australia’s Role and Technical Delivery

Apex Energy Australia delivered a suspended works package involving the installation of electrical and communications conduits and supporting bracket systems across the three project sites.

Our role included:

  • Custom manufacturing suspension brackets in-house
  • Procuring custom-made materials to meet strict project quality requirements
  • Installing support brackets and conduit systems across all three tram crossing locations
  • Delivering works for 150mm heavy-duty electrical conduits and 50mm communications conduits
  • Coordinating closely with other contractors working across the project sites
  • Managing delivery within a high-pressure, time-critical infrastructure program

Because each site had its own design requirements, our team custom-fabricated the bracket systems to suit the individual crossing conditions. This ensured the conduit support systems were fit for purpose and able to meet the structural and operational demands of the tram environment.

The installation required careful project management, practical site coordination and strong communication with other contractors to keep works moving safely and efficiently.

Working Within a Major Transport Infrastructure Program

The Tram Grade Separation Projects formed part of a major government-backed infrastructure program jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments. The broader works supported more than 1,115 jobs during construction and included new overpasses, upgraded intersections, improved lighting and drainage, and upgrades to pedestrian and cycling connections.

Within this broader program, Apex Energy Australia’s contribution supported the safe and reliable installation of critical electrical and communications pathways across key tram infrastructure.

The work demonstrates Apex Energy Australia’s capability in delivering specialised electrical infrastructure for complex, high-pressure projects where technical accuracy, custom fabrication and coordination are essential.

Project Outcome

Despite the pressure of a delayed start and fixed delivery milestone, Apex successfully delivered its works package to support the broader project schedule.

The team manufactured, sourced and installed custom bracket and conduit systems across all three tram crossing locations, helping enable the wider project team to progress toward the return of tram services.

The project highlights Apex Energy Australia’s ability to deliver practical, technically detailed electrical and communications infrastructure within major transport environments.

Looking Ahead

As South Australia continues to invest in safer, more reliable transport infrastructure, projects like the Tram Grade Separation Projects demonstrate the importance of experienced delivery partners who can work across complex sites, tight timeframes and demanding technical requirements.

For Apex Energy Australia, the project reflects the company’s capability in custom fabrication, electrical installation, project coordination and infrastructure delivery across critical transport environments.
